Marin Organic School Lunch Program
Green Zebra donates a portion of 2008 Marin guide proceeds to the Marin Organic School Lunch Program, which offers a combination of purchased and gleaned food from Marin Organic farms to participating schools throughout the county to use in the lunches they serve. Gleaned produce, up to 20% of what's grown, would otherwise be left in the fields because it doesn't meet the strict aesthetic requirements of restaurants or retail markets. So far, over 90,000 pounds of local, certified organic products have been delivered to participating schools, educational facilities, and underserved communities throughout Marin.
As the primary link between farmers and eaters, Marin Organic is committed to nurturing a sustainable, organic county in which producers and those who rely on them recognize their mutual interdependence. By restoring ecological and social values to agriculture and realigning traditional expectations of farming with a holistic understanding of ecology, Marin Organic aims to empower local communities, foster environmentally sound agriculture and celebrate local food production to create a healthy, sustainable, and safe environment for all.
